Original 2026 data

The state of small business websites in Houston

I sampled 7,099 Houston businesses across 47 industries, then audited the 5,109 websites among them. Here is where the score comes from, what those sites run on, and where the points are going.

73/100

Grade C, tied 4th of 24 cities I audited

Where the points went

The score is ten weighted checks, ranked here by what each one costs. The biggest single loss is blogging, at 6.4 of its 10 points. Longer bar, more points left on the table.

  • Publishes a blog 6.4 lost of 10
  • Page speed 6.3 lost of 15
  • Mobile-friendly 3.3 lost of 15
  • Links a social profile 3.3 lost of 10
  • Schema markup 2.9 lost of 10
  • Analytics installed 2.2 lost of 5
  • Meta description 1.1 lost of 5
  • Google reviews 0.9 lost of 15
  • HTTPS 0.5 lost of 10
  • Title tag 0.1 lost of 5

27 points of 100 left on the table. Track length is the check's weight, so a five-point check can never cost what a fifteen-point one does. Each check is averaged across the 47 markets, the same way the score itself is built, so these ten bars add back to the 73 above. The table at the foot of this section pools by sample size instead, which answers a different question and lands a little differently. Weights are on the methodology page.

Independents against the chains

I can tell a franchise or chain location from an independent, so here are both, on the checks where they split hardest. The widest gap is blogging: 34% of independents against 54% of chains.

  • Independents (4,181 sites)
  • Chains and franchises (928 sites)
  • Publishes a blog 34% vs 54%
  • Runs analytics 54% vs 73%
  • Has an H1 73% vs 91%
  • Links a social profile 64% vs 82%
  • Has sharing tags 73% vs 84%
  • Uses schema markup 69% vs 80%

Scale runs 0 to 100%. Only the checks where both groups were measured the same way are comparable, so speed and the meta checks sit this one out.

What these sites are built on

The platform behind each of the 5,109 homepages I audited, where I could identify one.

  • WordPress 37.2%
  • Wix 5.9%
  • Squarespace 5.7%
  • GoDaddy 5.5%
  • Shopify 5.1%
  • Webflow 1.5%

A platform was identified on 68% of audited sites. The rest are hand-built or run something the fingerprinting misses, and a site can match more than one, so these do not sum to 100%.

How I counted

Every rate above has its own denominator. This is where they come from, out of the 31,115 Houston businesses in my listings census.

  1. Businesses sampled 7,099 100%
  2. Had a website 5,863 83%
  3. Homepage audited 5,109 72%
  4. Speed-tested 3,543 50%

Of the sites that never made it into the audit, 372 would not load, 305 blocked me, and 77 turned out to be a social profile rather than a website. 928 of the businesses sampled are chain or franchise locations. Full method on the methodology page.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Houston web design

If you have any other questions, please contact us.

What does a website cost for a Houston small business?

Traditional web design is a lump-sum project. WebFX puts agency design at $3,000 to $30,000+, with freelancer design at $500 to $10,000+. Most Houston owners I talk to are looking for a smarter way to invest in their online presence. Our model is $95 a month with no build fee, and it includes hosting, maintenance, and support the whole time. The site is yours to keep from the very first month.

Should I hire a web designer based in Houston?

You don't need someone physically located in Houston, but you do need someone who is reachable, accountable, and invested in your success long-term. A lot of Houston businesses have been burned by overseas freelancers or agencies that disappear after the project closes. What you actually need is a web designer with a track record, transparent pricing, and ongoing support built into the model. RapidWebLaunch fits that description and works with small businesses across North America, including Houston.

What's the difference between a Houston web design agency and a freelancer?

Freelancers tend to be more affordable and easier to communicate with, but they come with risks: inconsistent availability, no team backup, and often no post-launch support. Houston web agencies offer more resources but charge accordingly, and smaller businesses often get deprioritized once the project is signed off. RapidWebLaunch is built to address both problems. You work directly with the founder on every project, get agency-level accountability, and pay a flat monthly rate that includes ongoing maintenance and support.

What percentage of Houston small businesses are online?

I counted this one myself instead of trusting a study. Of the 7,099 Houston businesses I sampled for my Web Presence Index, 82.6% have a website at all, right in line with 82.6% nationally. That leaves 17% missing from the web entirely. The ones that do have websites aren't automatically winning either. A poorly built or outdated site can be worse than no site at all. What matters is having a site that actually works for your business.

Can a website actually help my Houston business make more money?

Yes. In BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey, 54% of consumers said they're most likely to visit a business's website after reading positive reviews, up from 32% in 2019. Houston is set up to cash in on that: 94.3% of the businesses I sampled here hold at least one Google review, ahead of 88.3% nationally and the best score of any city I track. A well-built site catches all that attention and converts it before you've even picked up the phone.

How long does it take to get a website built?

Industry timelines vary a lot. A freelancer typically needs 4 to 8 weeks for a small business website. A full-service agency usually takes 2 to 4 months, sometimes longer. For Houston small businesses that want to move faster, RapidWebLaunch typically delivers in about 1 week. The short timeline isn't about cutting corners. It's about a focused process, a single point of contact, and no unnecessary back-and-forth. You tell me what you need, I build it, and we launch.

Is SEO necessary for a small business website?

For a Houston small business, SEO is worth taking seriously. BrightEdge's channel research found that organic search drives just over half of trackable web traffic, more than any other channel. And plenty of Houston competitors leave the basics undone: 21% of the sites I audited here skip the meta description, the one-line summary Google prints under their name. If a potential customer searches for the service you offer in Houston and your website doesn't appear, that business goes to a competitor who does. Your website gives you something worth ranking. SEO is what gets it ranked. RapidWebLaunch offers SEO services alongside web design for businesses that want both.

How do I know if my website needs a redesign?

A few honest questions to ask about your current site: does it load fast on a phone? Does it clearly explain what your Houston business does and how to contact you? Does it still reflect how your business looks today? If you're saying no to more than one of those, it's probably holding you back. Speed is the usual offender: Houston sites average 58 out of 100 on Google's phone speed test, well short of the 90 Google calls good. If you want an honest assessment before deciding, RapidWebLaunch offers a free website audit at rapidweblaunch.com/resources/website-audits.
