51 five-star reviews don't happen by accident. Here's the story.
I sampled 6,929 Montreal businesses across 47 industries, then audited the 5,136 websites among them. Here is where the score comes from, what those sites run on, and where the points are going.
70/100
Grade C, tied 22nd of 24 cities I audited
The score is ten weighted checks, ranked here by what each one costs. The biggest single loss is blogging, at 7.8 of its 10 points. Longer bar, more points left on the table.
30 points of 100 left on the table. Track length is the check's weight, so a five-point check can never cost what a fifteen-point one does. Each check is averaged across the 47 markets, the same way the score itself is built, so these ten bars add back to the 70 above. The table at the foot of this section pools by sample size instead, which answers a different question and lands a little differently. Weights are on the methodology page.
I can tell a franchise or chain location from an independent, so here are both, on the checks where they split hardest. The widest gap is analytics: 57% of independents against 82% of chains.
Scale runs 0 to 100%. Only the checks where both groups were measured the same way are comparable, so speed and the meta checks sit this one out.
The platform behind each of the 5,136 homepages I audited, where I could identify one.
A platform was identified on 72% of audited sites. The rest are hand-built or run something the fingerprinting misses, and a site can match more than one, so these do not sum to 100%.
Every rate above has its own denominator. This is where they come from, out of the 35,353 Montreal businesses in my listings census.
Of the sites that never made it into the audit, 393 would not load, 205 blocked me, and 83 turned out to be a social profile rather than a website. 425 of the businesses sampled are chain or franchise locations. Full method on the methodology page.

A fair price for professional web design in Montreal depends on what's included. Agencies typically charge $3,000 to $30,000+ and then hand you a site with no ongoing support. At $95 a month, our model includes the build, hosting, maintenance, security, and monthly reports for as long as you stay. You own the site from the very first month. For a small business in Montreal, that kind of all-in pricing is a lot easier to budget for than one big invoice.
There are real benefits to working with someone familiar with the Montreal market, but physical proximity is the least important factor. A web designer who is reachable, accountable, and invested in your long-term success is worth far more than one who is simply nearby. RapidWebLaunch works with small businesses in Montreal remotely, with direct communication, no contracts, and ongoing monthly maintenance built into every plan.
For most Montreal small businesses, the choice between a freelancer and an agency comes down to what you can afford vs what you can rely on. Freelancers are accessible but inconsistent. Agencies are consistent but expensive. RapidWebLaunch removes that trade-off entirely. You get a single point of contact who personally handles your website, a predictable monthly rate that includes ongoing support, and no contract locking you in.
Yes, absolutely. Even in 2026, 16% of the 6,929 Montreal businesses I sampled have no website at all, against 17% of the 131,514 businesses I sampled nationwide. Customer behaviour hasn't changed: people search before they buy, call, or visit. A business without a website is asking potential customers to take an extra step that most won't bother with.
Consumer behaviour says yes. In BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey, people were most likely (54%) to visit a business's website after reading positive reviews. No website, and that ready-to-buy visit has nowhere to land. In Montreal, a well-built website means you're visible and credible at the exact moment a customer is deciding who to work with.
If you're a Montreal business owner who needs a website sooner rather than later, the timeline matters. Agencies in most markets take 2 to 4 months. Freelancers typically run 4 to 8 weeks. At RapidWebLaunch, the average turnaround from sign-up to launch is about 1 week. The speed comes from a direct, founder-led process with no internal delays. One person handles design, development, and launch. You're not waiting for a project manager to schedule a call, or for a designer to finish someone else's revisions before starting yours.
A new Montreal business website won't rank on Google by itself. Search engines need to crawl and index the site, and ranking for competitive local terms requires deliberate SEO work: keyword targeting, on-page optimization, and building authority over time. That process takes months, which is why the earlier you start, the better. The upside? Most of your competition isn't doing the work. Only 21.9% of the Montreal sites I audited publish a blog, behind 37.0% nationally. RapidWebLaunch offers SEO services alongside web design for Montreal businesses that want to be found, not just online.
Potentially yes. Stanford's Web Credibility Project found that people judge a site's credibility partly on whether the design looks professional. And the mobile side shows up in my own audit: 24% of the Montreal sites I audited fail the mobile-friendly check, against 22% across everything I audited nationwide. An outdated site doesn't have to be broken to cost you business. It just has to look less trustworthy than the competitor a visitor compares you to. If you're unsure whether your site is helping or hurting, RapidWebLaunch offers a free website audit at rapidweblaunch.com/resources/website-audits.
