51 five-star reviews don't happen by accident. Here's the story.
I sampled 6,105 Washington DC businesses across 47 industries, then audited the 4,373 websites among them. Here is where the score comes from, what those sites run on, and where the points are going.
73/100
Grade C, tied 4th of 24 cities I audited
The score is ten weighted checks, ranked here by what each one costs. The biggest single loss is page speed, at 6.5 of its 15 points. Longer bar, more points left on the table.
27 points of 100 left on the table. Track length is the check's weight, so a five-point check can never cost what a fifteen-point one does. Each check is averaged across the 47 markets, the same way the score itself is built, so these ten bars add back to the 73 above. The table at the foot of this section pools by sample size instead, which answers a different question and lands a little differently. Weights are on the methodology page.
I can tell a franchise or chain location from an independent, so here are both, on the checks where they split hardest. The widest gap is analytics: 57% of independents against 83% of chains.
Scale runs 0 to 100%. Only the checks where both groups were measured the same way are comparable, so speed and the meta checks sit this one out.
The platform behind each of the 4,373 homepages I audited, where I could identify one.
A platform was identified on 70% of audited sites. The rest are hand-built or run something the fingerprinting misses, and a site can match more than one, so these do not sum to 100%.
Every rate above has its own denominator. This is where they come from, out of the 19,171 Washington DC businesses in my listings census.
Of the sites that never made it into the audit, 426 would not load, 407 blocked me, and 24 turned out to be a social profile rather than a website. 781 of the businesses sampled are chain or franchise locations. Full method on the methodology page.

A fair price for web design in Washington DC depends on what's included. WebFX pegs agency design at $3,000 to $30,000+, with a professionally built basic small business site running $500 to $5,000+, and those quotes rarely include ongoing support. At $95 a month, our model includes the build, hosting, maintenance, security, and monthly reports for as long as you stay. You own the site from the very first month. For a Washington DC small business, one predictable number is a lot easier to budget for than a five-figure invoice.
There are real benefits to working with someone familiar with the Washington DC market, but physical proximity is the least important factor. A web designer who is reachable, accountable, and invested in your long-term success is worth far more than one who is simply nearby. RapidWebLaunch works with small businesses in Washington DC remotely, with direct communication, no contracts, and ongoing monthly maintenance built into every plan.
For most Washington DC small businesses, the choice between a freelancer and an agency comes down to what you can afford vs what you can rely on. Freelancers are accessible but inconsistent. Agencies are consistent but expensive. RapidWebLaunch removes that trade-off entirely. You get a single point of contact who personally handles your website, a predictable monthly rate that includes ongoing support, and no contract locking you in.
Yes. For my own audit I sampled 6,105 Washington DC businesses, and 14% of them have no website at all. DC is actually ahead of the national rate (85.7% of the businesses I sampled have one, vs 82.6% across the country), so the holdouts stick out even more. Customer behaviour hasn't changed: people search before they buy, call, or visit. A business without a website is asking potential customers to take an extra step that most won't bother with.
Nobody can audit revenue from the outside, so I won't pretend to. I can show you how customers behave, though. In BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey, 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 54% head to the business's website after reading positive ones. No website means that visit never happens. For a Washington DC business, a well-built site makes you visible and credible at the exact moment a customer decides who to work with.
If you're a Washington DC business owner who needs a website sooner rather than later, the timeline matters. Agencies in most markets take 2 to 4 months. Freelancers typically run 4 to 8 weeks. At RapidWebLaunch, the average turnaround from sign-up to launch is about 1 week. The speed comes from a direct, founder-led process with no internal delays. One person handles design, development, and launch. You're not waiting for a project manager to schedule a call, or for a designer to finish someone else's revisions before starting yours.
A new Washington DC business website won't rank on Google by itself. Search engines need to crawl and index it first, and ranking for competitive local terms takes deliberate SEO work: keyword targeting, on-page optimization, and authority built over time. That takes months, which is why the earlier you start, the better. DC's competition isn't sitting still either. 40.8% of the DC sites I audited publish a blog, ahead of the 37.0% national rate. RapidWebLaunch offers SEO services alongside web design for Washington DC businesses that want to be found, not just online.
Potentially yes. Stanford's Web Credibility Project found that people judge a site's credibility partly on how professional the design looks. Mobile is the other leak: 21% of the Washington DC sites I audited fail the mobile-friendly check, against 22% across everything I audited. An outdated site doesn't have to be broken to cost you business. It just has to look less trustworthy than the competitor a visitor compares you to. If you're unsure whether yours is helping or hurting, RapidWebLaunch offers a free website audit at rapidweblaunch.com/resources/website-audits.
Honesty is the baseline here, not a bonus feature. You'll always know what you're paying, what you're getting, and who to call if something isn't right. Patrick's video covers the rest.
