Your fashion website isn't just an online catalog, it's your most powerful sales tool for building your brand and moving inventory. Here are the 6 essential features that turn browsers into buyers:
Show how pieces work together with styled photos that inspire purchases and demonstrate versatility.
Reduce returns with detailed sizing charts, fit information, and model measurements for reference.
Let customers browse by type, occasion, color, or price to find exactly what they want quickly.
Display real customers wearing your products to show fit, color accuracy, and styling inspiration.
Allow shoppers to save items for later and create curated collections they can share.
Highlight trending pieces and fresh inventory to create urgency and showcase what's popular.
I sampled 3,320 fashion retailers across 24 cities, then audited the 2,064 websites among them. Here is where the score comes from, what those sites run on, and where the points are going.
70/100
Grade C, tied 34th of 47 industries I audited
The score is ten weighted checks, ranked here by what each one costs. The biggest single loss is blogging, at 8.2 of its 10 points. Longer bar, more points left on the table.
30 points of 100 left on the table. Track length is the check's weight, so a five-point check can never cost what a fifteen-point one does. Each check is averaged across the 24 markets, the same way the score itself is built, so these ten bars add back to the 70 above. The table at the foot of this section pools by sample size instead, which answers a different question and lands a little differently. Weights are on the methodology page.
I can tell a franchise or chain location from an independent, so here are both, on the checks where they split hardest. The widest gap is analytics: 38% of independents against 65% of chains.
Scale runs 0 to 100%. Only the checks where both groups were measured the same way are comparable, so speed and the meta checks sit this one out.
The platform behind each of the 2,064 homepages I audited, where I could identify one.
A platform was identified on 87% of audited sites. The rest are hand-built or run something the fingerprinting misses, and a site can match more than one, so these do not sum to 100%.
Every rate above has its own denominator. This is where they come from, out of the 7,661 businesses in this trade in my listings census.
Of the sites that never made it into the audit, 225 would not load, 163 blocked me, and 89 turned out to be a social profile rather than a website. 450 of the businesses sampled are chain or franchise locations. Full method on the methodology page.

Everything you want to know about getting a website built for your fashion brand.
High-quality product photos that load fast. Multiple angles, zoom, and ideally video. Slow or low-quality images kill conversion rates instantly.
Detailed size guides with measurements, model stats, and fit descriptions. Customer review photos showing real people wearing items help enormously too.
If you can swing it, yes. At minimum, offer free shipping over a threshold to increase average order value.
Only if you'll maintain it. One lookbook per season beats a blog that died in 2022. Focus on Instagram and email if you're not writing regularly.
That depends on your traffic strategy. If you're running Instagram/Facebook ads to warm audiences, immediately. For cold traffic and SEO, 3-6 months.
Absolutely critical. 27% of the fashion sites I audited fail the mobile-friendly check. If your mobile checkout is clunky, you're losing sales every day.
Don't compete on price. Compete on uniqueness, curation, and brand story. Own your niche.
Easy returns are mandatory for fashion e-commerce. Free returns over a threshold if possible. Return anxiety kills conversion rates.
It helps for sizing questions and styling advice. But don't make it required. Some shoppers want quick, anonymous browsing.
Extremely valuable. Real customers wearing your clothes show fit, color accuracy, and styling possibilities.
